Gum Disease/Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It begins with plaque buildup, which, if not removed, can harden into tartar, leading to inflammation and gum recession.
Early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis, can often be reversed with proper oral hygiene and professional cleanings. In more advanced stages, known as periodontitis, deeper cleanings, scaling, root planing, or even surgery may be required to treat the infection and prevent tooth loss. Long-term management includes regular dental checkups, professional cleanings, and consistent at-home care. By addressing gum disease early and maintaining healthy habits, patients can protect their smiles and overall oral health.
